One irrefutable truth of school summer holidays, especially when you are caring for a child with special needs and behavioural problems is that there are limits to where you can go and what you can do.

My days have been on a only slightly variable pattern, most are spent at home with my children, the rest are at work. Our weekends also have a pattern of shopping and visiting my husband’s family. This is an enjoyable routine yet sometimes I become incredibly aware of how it does not alter. Work, home, home, work, grandparents. I begin to feel a mental chorus chiming, lather, rinse, repeat.

This evening we took advantage of a little variation. My older girl is horribly full of the flu and fancied a strawberry milkshake to ease her symptoms, or just to taste good, its mention made me rather want one too.

What better than to take advance of having grown kids, that maturing family oxymoron. Two adults who didn’t want to go out but were willing to keep an open ear for their younger sister safely ensconced in bed.

So out we went. Fifteen minutes of not being on duty. Fifteen minutes where both of us were required to fetch a couple of milkshakes.

Fifteen minutes that were a welcome respite.

Fifteen minutes that also gave me a chance to snap a quick pic as part of the August Break 2013.

I hope you have some break from your responsibilities today where you can take a breath and just be, even if it is just a precious moment.
